Hacia una Sociedad Equitativa: Influencia de la Ciencia y la Tecnología
AbstractThis new XXI Century, just in its second decade, presents radical changes in face of the events and circumstances of its predecessor. Scientific advances, communications and technological innovations, previously unthinkable, make almost the entire world population live in simultaneity and in the enjoyment of well-being. It is necessary, however, to emphasize the adverb almost as the reality limits dramatically the scope of said supposed simultaneity and well-being. How many are left out of those benefits? It may be necessary to resort to the statistics of specialists and of international organizations, which are not devoid of errors and often unconvincing interpretations. In addition, multiple authors have dealt with statistics and their "elegant" costumes. Darrell Huff's book, over 60 years old, is a spectacular and successful example. The objective of this article, using historical antecedents and own experiences and others, tries to underline the leading role of Science and Technology (S&T) practiced only by a few in-percentage terms, in the extension of its benefits to the population world. We do not ignore, however, the negative and even harmful aspects that the same S&T can also cause according to their uses. It also emphasizes the essential role played by universities, natural areas of such activities of high intellectual level, and where the only requirement required of the potential student must be their ability. Latin America, Argentina in particular, must clearly recognize and encourage scientific development adequately, provided the political environment is sincere, realistic and active in its approaches.
